There are so many different methods for the "proper way" to wash your face. There's a point of view of the water temperature for before and after a wash, there's many opinions on exfoliating, the topics of cleansers and moisturizers, and the list goes on and on. Regardless of what method or products you use, the process of 'how to' wash your face isn't more important than 'how often' you should be washing your face.
Generally speaking everyone should be washing both morning and night and in between during those sweaty occasions, unless you are dealing with dry and sensitive skin. People with this skin condition can remove all moisture from their skin by washing it frequently. It's best to keep it at a minimum and if applicable always do what the doctor recommends.
If you have oily or acne prone skin, you naturally will feel that you need to constantly wash your face to remove the oil and buildups. That can actually do your face more harm than good. All those washes will eventually dry up the surface of your skin and force it to regain it's moisture. If you had a problem with oils before, you could be making your face produce more than it needs to which can only worsen your skin conditions. Take it easy and don't panic. Just stick to washing and treating your face 2x per day.
